Renting a Porta Potty When Your Septic or Sewer Fails
A failed septic system is common on rural lots around Cortez. Here is how to keep the household going until it is fixed.

Should you rent a porta potty when the septic system fails?
Rent a porta potty as soon as the septic system backs up or the pumper tells you to stop using water. Every flush adds water to a failing tank or leach field and can push sewage back into the house. A porta potty lets the household keep using a toilet while the repair is scheduled.
Which unit is best for a family at home?
A flushing unit with a built-in sink is the best choice for a family using the unit daily, because everyone can wash hands right there. A standard unit covers a short repair of a few days. Add a hand washing station if young kids or older adults will use a standard unit.
Compare the flushing unit and standard unit.
Where should the porta potty go at a house?
Put the porta potty on the driveway or a level side yard close to the back door, at least 10 feet from windows. Keep it off the septic tank lid and leach field, since the excavator will need that ground. The truck must reach within 25 feet for weekly service.
How long do septic repairs usually take?
A septic pump-out takes a day; a tank or pipe repair often takes a few days to two weeks; a new leach field can take several weeks once permits are issued. Rent for 28 days with weekly service, then call for pickup when the system is back. Pickup follows within 1 to 2 business days.
Septic permits in the county go through Montezuma County under Colorado Regulation 43. Check with the county for current rules.
