What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level with no step, a door frame 32 inches wide, grab bars beside the seat and more than 16 square feet of floor inside. The wheelchair-accessible unit is about 62 inches square, close to twice the footprint of a standard porta potty.

Specs from the manufacturer listing for the PolyJohn Comfort XL: product sheet. Units of equal size may be sent when that model is booked out.
The manufacturer describes this model as designed for wheelchair users. Whether a full setup meets the ADA depends on the route to the unit, the surface and how many units you have, so confirm with your venue or permit office.
Hold an accessible unit for your date
Accessible units book out before standard ones on summer weekends.
(970) 239-2060How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties does an event need?
Section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards says at least 5 percent of portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than one. An event with 12 porta potties in one cluster needs 1 accessible unit. An event with 21 units in one cluster needs 2, because 5 percent of 21 is 1.05 and rounds up.
| Units in the cluster | Accessible units required (minimum) |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 4 |
Read the rule at the U.S. Department of Justice 2010 ADA Standards. Private backyard parties are not covered, but one accessible unit is still the kind choice if a guest needs it.
Where should a wheelchair-accessible porta potty go?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty needs a firm, level pad about 7 feet square, with a 60-inch turning space clear in front of the door. Grass works when dry and mowed short; gravel and soft sand do not. Place the accessible unit at the end of the row closest to seating and parking, not behind other units.
- Firm path from parking to the door: packed dirt, pavement or plywood over grass
- Door facing the path, not a fence
- Clear 60-inch circle in front of the door
- Away from slopes, gutters and ditches
Questions before you book
Is your accessible porta potty ADA-compliant?
The unit is built for wheelchair users with a ground-level floor, grab bars and a wide door. ADA compliance depends on the whole setup, including the path to the door and the number of units, so we help you place it and you confirm with your venue or permit office.
Do I need an accessible porta potty for a private party?
Private parties at a home are not covered by the ADA portable toilet rule. If any guest uses a wheelchair, walker or cane, an accessible unit saves them a hard trip. Parents with small children also like the extra room.
Can an accessible unit be used for a baby changing station?
Accessible units have room for a parent and child together, and some include a fold-down changing shelf. Ask when you book if you need the shelf, since not every unit has one.
Does the accessible unit hold as much as a standard one?
The accessible unit's holding tank is about 33 gallons, smaller than the 60-gallon tank in a standard unit. At busy events, we count it as a half-capacity unit and plan service around that.
